Ganna Sorbat is an award-winning Ukrainian-born composer, vocalist, and pianist whose work bridges ancestral Slavic vocal tradition with contemporary cinematic storytelling. Classically trained from the age of seven, she holds degrees in composition and concert piano from the Kharkiv National Kotlyarevsky University of Arts. Her artistic voice is rooted in both formal Western training and the open-throat “white voice” singing tradition of Ukrainian and Slavic folk music — a raw, resonant technique she recontextualizes within modern film, television, and hybrid orchestral landscapes. Sorbat’s vocal and compositional work often explores themes of memory, displacement, ritual, and resilience. Her signature sound blends ululating vibrato, sustained melodic arcs, layered harmonies, and atmospheric textures over orchestral and electronic frameworks — creating an emotional language that moves between intimacy and cinematic scale. She collaborates frequently with Emmy-nominated composer David Majzlin and Emmy-winning composer Katya Richardson, contributing distinctive Slavic-inspired vocals and co-creating works positioned for screen storytelling. Her voice appears in the documentary Match in a Haystack, and her recent projects continue to expand her presence in film-forward musical spaces. In addition to her compositional work, Sorbat is a multilingual lyricist and cultural translator, adapting Ukrainian and Russian texts into English while preserving emotional and sonic integrity. She also collaborates with composer and conductor Reuven Herman under the moniker Phoenix Roar. Awards and recognitions include the Grand Prize (World Music) at the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for “Bells and Shadows” (with David Majzlin), a Hollywood Independent Music Award nomination for “Ashes and the Name” (with David Majzlin), and Finalist honors at the Artemis Women in Action Film Festival for “Between Earth & Sky.” Sorbat's work has also been recognized in numerous international music and film competitions.
